A brand new motorway that connects the three Baltic states – Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia – to Poland – passes through a key strategic area.
The Via Baltica road crosses the Suwalki Gap, often described as Nato’s achilles heel because it is a tiny strip of land between Russia’s Kaliningrad exclave and the pro-Moscow country of Belarus.
Nato hopes the new road will allow its troops to potentially move faster in the case of any invasion.
