New transport secretary appointed as Louise Haigh becomes first Starmer minister to resign

Heidi Alexander has been appointed transport secretary after Louise Haigh resigned, becoming the first minister to step down from Sir Keir Starmer’s new Labour government.

It comes after Sky News revealed that she pleaded guilty to a criminal offence relating to a work mobile phone in 2013.

Downing Street declined to clarify whether they knew about Ms Haigh’s conviction but suggested that new information had come to light. Sky’s Political Correspondent Rob Powell reports.
