NHS maternity services are failing women, through a raft of problems ranging from a reluctance to admit mistakes, racism, staff shortages, and "a lack of kindness and compassion," according to a government-ordered investigation.
An interim report published by Baroness Amos as part of her National Maternity and Neonatal Investigation found deep-rooted issues across the NHS and a system that “is not working for women, babies and families, or for staff”.
Stories her team heard included a delivery where the delivery room was too small so a "door had to be left open to provide enough space – with a screen placed outside of the room to protect families’ privacy".
