Nicolas Sarkozy has been sentenced to five years in prison for criminal conspiracy in a case linked to the late Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi’s government.
The former French President was accused of financing his presidential campaign with millions of euros from Libya in exchange for diplomatic favours between 2005 and 2007.
In a surprise decision, the court ruled that Sarkozy will spend time behind bars even if he appeals, but the sentencing date would take place at a later time, preventing him from being led from the courtroom in handcuffs.
