The number of people living in internal displacement has more than doubled since 2018, reaching a record high of 83.4 million across 117 countries and territories at the end of 2024.
Internally displaced people (IDPs) are those who are forced to flee their homes due to factors like conflict, violence, persecution or disasters, but have to remain in their country’s borders so are not classed as refugees.
ITV News spoke to Ivana Hajzmanova from the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre about the scale of the increase and what we can do to mitigate it.
