The chair of the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) has resigned in the wake of the watchdog’s leaking of details of the chancellor’s Budget.
Richard Hughes said he had done so in order for the watchdog to “quickly move on from this regrettable incident", in his letter to Rachel Reeves and Dame Meg Hillier, Chair of the Treasury Select Committee.
It comes after the OBR’s investigation into the incident was published on Monday afternoon, concluding the leak of its Economic and Fiscal Outlook (EFO) before last Wednesday’s Budget was the “worst failure” in the watchdog’s history.
