Octopus 'invasion' decimating crab numbers with fishermen reporting 50% reduction in hauls| ITV News

The fishing industry along England’s south west coast is facing a new threat, and this time it’s not about quotas or fishing rights.

On average, crab sells for about £3 a kilo, while octopus sells for around £8 a kilo. It means some fishermen are ironically now relying on the very thing that’s damaging their business.

The tentacled visitors made the southwest their home about two years ago. They have a relatively short lifespan and are only expected to live another year here.

If they continue to damage the crab population and also leave these waters, fishermen say they might have to completely change what they catch.
