The death toll from last week’s catastrophic floods and landslides in southeast Asia rose further today as emergency crews raced to reach survivors and recover more bodies.

A huge area has been impacted and rescue teams are struggling reach some of the remote areas affected.

The number of people killed has now passed 13-hundred and hundreds more are missing.

Elkaduwa, usually promoted as one of the most tranquil corners of Sri Lanka’s Central Province, is today a village cut off from the world.

The mist-covered hillsides of Matale, famed for tea, spices and quiet rural life, have been torn apart by Cyclone Ditwah, the country’s worst natural disaster in decades.
