Oracy to be added to school curriculum in England

As Lewis Denison explains, Education Secretary Lucy Powell has announced plans to give oracy – speaking, listening and communicating – “equal status” to reading and writing in the curriculum.

Ms Powell said it would become a “core part” of every child’s education from primary to GCSE and beyond as she warned it has been “a marker of privilege”.

She said the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) means greater emphasis should be placed on skills that make us “human”, and she said oracy – the ability to articulate oneself “confidently” – is central to success in work and in life. #politics
