Pakistan’s defence minister has declared what he called ‘open war’ as his forces carried out airstrikes on Afghan cities and the capital Kabul.
There was also fighting along the countries’ border with Afghan officials saying they carried out retaliation against Pakistani troops.
The action overnight represents a major escalation of the conflict after a ceasefire was declared in October.
