Pakistan and Turkey say they are willing to deploy troops to Saudi Arabia under a new mutual defense agreement, with Riyadh facing continued attacks by Yemen’s Houthis.
The move puts Pakistan in an unusually delicate position. Islamabad is strengthening its military commitment to Saudi Arabia while simultaneously acting as a mediator between Iran and the United States. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has praised Pakistan for winning the trust of both Tehran and Washington.
So what exactly have Pakistan and Turkey committed to under the Mecca Agreement? And could Pakistan’s military role alongside Saudi Arabia undermine its credibility with Iran, or even draw Islamabad into a wider regional conflict?
Michael Kugelman, Senior Fellow for South Asia at the Atlantic Council in Washington, joins The Day to examine Pakistan’s increasingly important diplomatic and military role in the Middle East.
