Papal conclave: secret ballot begins to elect new pope

The Conclave in Vatican City is under way to elect the 267th Pope. Conclave is Latin and means with key. In the 13th century the cardinal electors were eventually locked in because it took them three years to make up their minds. Today it is about secrecy.
The Sistine chapel, where the vote takes place is hermetically sealed from the outside world, swept for bugs, with a no-phone policy under pain of excommunication.

The 133 cardinals need to reach a two thirds majority to be able to utter the famous Latin phrase: Habemus Papam. We have a Pope.
