United States defence secretary Pete Hegseth said the US has "devastated the Iranian nuclear programme" with surprise overnight air strikes – but claims America “does not seek war”.
Officials confirmed three Iranian nuclear sites were targeted early on Sunday, with the US directly joining the conflict after more than a week of strikes between Israel and Iran.
During a Pentagon press briefing, Hegseth told reporters that the US "conducted a precision strike in the middle of the night against three nuclear facilities in Iran: Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan".
He also revealed a decoy operation was in place to ensure an element of surprise, including the choice to move a number of B-2 bombers from their base in Missouri earlier on Saturday, while the main strike "package" flew undetected for 37 hours.
