People promoting illegal Channel crossings online to be criminalised

The government says it will amend legislation to criminalise people smugglers who promote illegal small boat crossings in social media ads and online posts.

It’s the latest move in their efforts to cut the number of migrants crossing the Channel illegally to the UK.

The Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has said she will also speed up the asylum process and tackle the backlog of asylum claims.

All of this as anti-immigrant groups faced off against anti-racism protesters in parts of the UK this weekend.
