Sir Keir Starmer says half a million more pupils will qualify for free school meals when the criteria is extended so that children from all families receiving Universal Credit qualify.
But the prime minister avoided questions on the two-child benefit cap, claiming today’s announcement is a "statement of intent", which will improve children’s attainment and save parents £500 a year.
He added: "I would see it as part of a wider package, because we’ve already done work on childcare, breakfast clubs, and school uniforms. So it’s about the children, giving them the best possible start in life."
