Keir Starmer has said the Home Office will close a ‘legal loophole’ that enabled a family of six from Gaza to claim asylum in UK under a scheme the government established to take in Ukrainian refugees.

‘This is a situation where we need to put our national interests before the law,’ said the leader of the Conservative party, Kemi Badenoch, who asked the prime minister whether he agreed that ‘we should legislate, even if lawyers warn that this might be incompatible with human rights law?’

Starmer replied that Badenoch’s ‘script doesn’t allow her to listen to the answer’ and confirmed that the government was going to change the law to close the loophole in question
