Closer to conflict than at any time since the second world war. That’s how Poland’s prime minister Donald Tusk assessed Russia’s incursion into Polish airspace.
It is a significant escalation by Moscow, though Russia insisted it had no intention to target Poland, a Nato ally. Poland invoked Nato’s Article 4, which obliges members of the fragile alliance to "consult", rather than mobilise retaliatory military action.

Dutch, Italian and Polish aircraft shot down four out of the 19 Russian drones as citizens were told to stay at home and Poland closed all its airports.
