Police failure exposed: why a serial rapist was allowed to run free

A Channel 4 News investigation has revealed how a serial rapist went on to attack multiple members of the public after a police force ignored warnings from one of its own officers, who had been raped by the same man.

Bruno Sala – a care worker – groomed his victims through online dating apps before raping them and inviting other men to also attack the women.

But we can now report that Hampshire Constabulary missed earlier chances to stop Sala after Police Constable Victoria Tomkins reported rape but was told by her own force that she could “be lying”.

Survivors say a number of Sala’s accomplices who raped them continue to walk the streets, alleging the existence of a larger sexual exploitation network across Hampshire.

In response to our investigation, Hampshire Constabulary said an internal review of its handling of the case had been launched – but said it had still not referred itself to the police watchdog.

A warning: This report contains references to themes that some readers may find distressing.
