Polls open for local elections and a key by-election in Runcorn and Helsby

Voting is underway for local elections across England. More than 1,600 seats are being contested in 23 councils, as well as six mayoral positions – two of them new.

There is a by-election for the Runcorn and Helsby seat formerly held by Labour. Polling stations are open until 10pm, with voters required to show photo ID, and all the results expected by tomorrow evening.
