Pope Francis blesses Easter crowds and meets JD Vance

The Pope has blessed a crowd of around 35,000 people in St Peter’s Square in a rare public appearance after his recovery from pneumonia.

In an address given by one of his archbishops, Pope Francis called for peace in Ukraine and Gaza – and made an appeal for migrants and others affected by violence.

On his way to the Basilica, he held a brief meeting with the US vice-president JD Vance – for what was described as "an exchange of Easter greetings."
