Pope Leo had a peaceful night in hospital in Rome after an operation to remove part of his lung following a diagnosis of cancer, the Vatican has said.

The 71-year-old underwent an hour and a half of surgery yesterday, and many of his appointments have been cancelled.
However there has been no word yet on whether he’ll be able to make a planned trip to South America next month.
