Protesters clash with police in Mozambique as new president is sworn in

Mozambique’s new president Daniel Chapo has officially taken office, while protesters in the country’s capital clashed with police as they demonstrated against what they say is a rigged election.

Escalating civil arrest began after the October 2024 election, when opposition leader Venancio Mondlane disputed the result.

Since then at least 300 people have been killed in clashes with police.
