The symbol of Madrid’s housing crisis protests, Maria del Carmen Abascal, has died in hospital, leading to an outpouring of grief among demonstrators on the streets of the Spanish capital. Known as Maricarmen, the 87-year-old was hospitalized with severe anxiety and exhaustion after being evicted from her home of 70 years. Her eviction triggered mass protests and forced the government to call a snap election.
