Abderrahim Fakir, a Moroccan-born entrepreneur who ran a removals and cleaning business, died on Sunday July 19 after police were called to deal with a man reported to be behaving aggressively and damaging a vehicle, Italian media said.
A video filmed by a resident and shared on social media showed the moment police intervened, with officers attempting to restrain and handcuff Fakir while he was lying face down. In the video, the man can be heard calling for help and breathing with increasing difficulty, until his movements appear to stop.
The incident drew responses from across the political spectrum, with opposition politicians demanding accountability and the governing coalition defending the officers involved.
