For the first time since Vladimir Putin’s troops invaded Ukraine – neighbouring Poland claims Russia’s drones have been shot down on its land.
“This is an act of aggression that posed a real threat to the safety of our citizens,” Poland’s Operation Command said in a post on X on Wednesday morning.
It is the first time Poland has had to directly intercept a Russian asset in its airspace since the war in Ukraine began in 2022.
In response, Poland – a Nato member state – requested that Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty be activated, which allows for nations to call a consultation when "the territorial integrity, political independence or security of any of the parties is threatened".
