Putin supports a ceasefire with Ukraine but says it must lead to 'lasting peace'

Putin stressed the need for a mechanism to monitor ceasefire violations but insisted he would not accept peacekeepers from Nato countries to oversee the truce.

Donald Trump said on Thursday he was cautiously optimistic about Putin’s remarks and reiterated that he stood ready to speak with him, ITV News International Editor Emma Murphy and US Correspondent Dan Rivers reports.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said he supports a ceasefire but insists it must lead to "lasting peace,” appearing to reject Ukraine’s proposal for a 30-day truce.

His comments came after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Russia has yet to give a "meaningful response" to Kyiv’s proposal.

Putin said on Thursday during a Moscow conference with his closest European ally, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko: “So the idea itself is correct, and we certainly support it… But there are issues that we need to discuss, and I think that we need to discuss it with our American colleagues and partners.

"We agree with the proposals to halt the fighting, but we proceed from the assumption that the ceasefire should lead to lasting peace and remove the root causes of the crisis."
