Tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets in Budapest to mark the anniversary of Hungary’s 1956 anti-Soviet uprising. On what is a highly symbolic day for Hungary, they demonstrated at competing events – one rally held by Viktor Orban’s governing party and another organized by the Prime Minister’s main political opponent. Both sides are looking to drum up support ahead of tense elections next year.
