Rapid Forces Movement claim city of El-Fashar as Sudan's army withdraws | ITV News

It has been a decisive and bloody day in the long-running war for control of Sudan. The country’s army has abandoned its last stronghold in the Darfur region after fierce fighting against the rebels known as the Rapid Support Forces, or RSF.

Since the war began 18 months ago, the army has won Khartoum back. But the RSF has taken territory in the south and west of the country. El Fashir, a regional capital, was the army’s last stronghold in the vast area of Darfur.

Over a third of the population has been displaced. That’s more than 12 million people. 3.3 million refugees have fled to neighbouring countries. Over 150,000 people have been killed. And more than 20 million are now in urgent need of medical care.
