Rare Chinese bible donated to Chelmsford charity shop sells for £56,000 | ITV News

Oxfam staff said they were in "complete shock" after the sale, as the book was initially valued at between £600 and £800, as ITV News Reporter Cari Davies found out.

The book is the first complete bible in Chinese and dates from 1815-22, when protestant missionaries living in the country began to translate scripture.

Nick Reeves, Oxfam Chelmsford’s bookshop manager, said: “The Bible was originally found by some of our brilliant volunteers, Chris Tyrrell and Eleanor Atac, in a pile of donations, who suspected it could be worth something.

“It’s amazing to think that a donation from our shop could help raise that much money Oxfam. It’s just wonderful.”
