Sewage spilled into England’s rivers, lakes and coasts for more than 3.6 million hours last year – put another way, that’s 400 years of poo.

The first full year of data, from all storm overflow monitors, show that although the number of spills was slightly down on 2023’s figures, their overall duration increased.
The Environment Secretary said the figures were ‘disgraceful’, while the water industry called them ‘disappointing’.
