Today’s A-level results were a happy occasion for thousands of schoolchildren, with the proportion of top grades higher than ever before, outside the Covid years.
But not all the records set today are a cause for celebration.
The results also exposed deep divides between those who do well, and those who do not — often determined by the region in which children live.
Among the starkest examples is the gap between the proportion of top A-level grades in London and north-east England – which is the widest it’s ever been.
