Red squirrels rise again as Aberdeen begins to eliminate American greys

Twenty years ago a red squirrel was a rare sighting in Aberdeen.

American grey squirrels had come to dominate food and habitats, and they carry a virus deadly to reds. Since 2009, Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels have been working to bring back the reds.

And it’s worked – campaigners say in the next two years, the greys will likely be eradicated from the city, while reds are thriving.
