Chancellor Rachel Reeves has asked the competition watchdog to crack down on energy firms if they tried exploiting the conflict in the Middle East for financial gain.
Reeves said the Competition and Markets Authority would be on "high alert" for excessive price hikes.
The AA warned that rising fuel costs were inevitable given the global price rises.
