The Liberal Democrat leader, Ed Davey, has said his party would not seek for Britain to rejoin the European Union in the next parliament, calling it a ‘long-term’ objective because the Conservatives had ‘done so much damage’.

Speaking at a manifesto launch, Davey said he wanted to see the UK back at the ‘heart of Europe’, adding: ‘It is clear you’re going to have to have a step-by-step approach to rebuild that trust, rebuild that relationship.’ Davey also said that would help the UK get a better trade deal with the EU
