Retired but not sacked: Police chief who banned Maccabi Tel Aviv fans stands down | ITV News

The chief constable of West Midlands Police retired after his force faced criticism over the decision to ban Maccabi Tel Aviv football fans from attending a football match against Aston Villa.

The decision was made by the Birmingham Safety Advisory Group to ban Maccabi Tel Aviv fans from attending the team’s Europa League match at Aston Villa in Birmingham on 6 November.

In a statement, Craig Guildford, 52, said the “political and media frenzy” around his position had become “detrimental” to the force.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said he had “done the right thing” by “stepping down” as chief constable of West Midlands Police.
