For the first time Donald Trump has claimed that an agreement to end the war in Ukraine is "very close" – while President Zelenskyy’s spokesman said he wanted to meet Mr Trump in the United States as soon as possible to hammer out a deal.

Mr Zelenskyy also urged European leaders to firm up their commitment to deploy a "reassurance force" after a ceasefire. The flurry of talks followed yet another widescale Russian missile and drone attack across Ukraine – which killed 7 people in the capital Kyiv.
