Russian drone and missile attack in western Ukraine kills at least 26 people

“People were terrified and tried to jump out of windows,” Ukrainian interior minister Ihor Klymenko said after at least 26 people were killed, including three children, in an overnight Russian drone and missile attack in western Ukraine.

Klymenko added that nearly 100 had been hurt in the strike that hit residential apartment buildings in the city of Ternopil with such force that the upper floors were torn away. The death toll is likely to rise with 22 people still missing.

On Telegram, Klymenko said that emergency crews were working through the night, combing the site; “The main thing is to find those who could still be under the rubble … Flames flared up instantly and engulfed the building in a wave. People were terrified and tried to jump out of windows.”

Ukraine’s air force said Russia had fired 476 drones and 48 missiles in the attack, striking energy and transport infrastructure and forcing emergency power cuts in a number of regions in frigid temperatures.

The strike comes amid reports that US and Russian officials have drafted a new plan to end the war in Ukraine – and that Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy will meet with top Pentagon officials in Kyiv today. But what do the new proposals consist of?
