The BBC says it knew about a police investigation into Scott Mills as far back as 2017 – but only acted after receiving new information in recent weeks.
Mills was questioned by police in 2018 over alleged offences, but no charges were brought and the case was closed in 2019.
The BBC has also apologised for failing to follow up a separate allegation raised last year.
The reasoning behind Scott Mills’ dismissal is still unknown. These allegations are historic and not pursued by criminal authorities.
