Sexually explicit deepfake images and videos banned in South Korea

South Korea’s parliament has passed a bill that makes it illegal to possess or watch sexually explicit deepfake images and videos.

Penalties include up to three years in prison and big fines. It follows an outcry there over Telegram group chats where sexually explicit and illegal deepfakes have been created and widely shared.

The law will also raise the maximum sentence for making such content from five years to seven.
