The Family Drug and Alcohol Courts – known as FDAC – have been hailed for their approach in providing intensive therapy for the root causes of addiction and mental health issues.

More than half of parents who go through FDAC are reunited with their children, compared with around 13% in traditional courts.

One mother, who had her children returned to her care, said, “if it hadn’t been for FDAC, I’d probably be dead".

Despite the results, two FDACs have closed in the last year and others are facing severe funding pressures.

In response, the government said it had supported the development of Family Drug and Alcohol Courts and was committed to improving the experiences of children and families across the system.
