Cities across France woke to scenes of devastation on Sunday, October 18. Protests which turned violent had left debris scattered across the ground, broken windows and shops looted.
Hundreds of thousands had taken to the streets across the country in protests over rising living costs and poor school conditions.
In Paris, the prosecutor’s office said more than 500 people were in custody, most facing charges of receiving stolen goods, association with intent to commit violence, and vandalism.
