Skiers create heart-shaped tribute for Crans-Montana fire

About 1,000 skiers created a giant heart on the snow on a World Cup slope in Crans-Montana on Sunday to pay tribute to the victims of last week’s fire. Forty people died and 116 were injured in the early hours of New Year’s Day as a fire rapidly spread inside Le Constellation in the Swiss resort.

The tribute unfolded on the Bellalui slope, famous for hosting men’s World Cup downhill starts, before moving to the nearby Chetseron area. The event was organised by the Swiss Ski School of Crans-Montana with local ski clubs and backed by Crans-Montana Tourism & Congress. Most of those taking part were children who had originally been scheduled to race that day. Organisers said the show of solidarity drew widespread support across the alpine community.
