Videos and photos shared on social media on Wednesday showed the city of Rethymno and the coastal village of Georgioupoli smothered in an eerie red haze. This phenomenon is caused by strong winds blowing dust across the Mediterranean from the Sahara.
These dust concentrations can reduce sunlight and visibility, while increasing levels of fine pollution particles, posing health risks. These particles block the sun and colour the sky red.
