In a statement the Israel Defense Forces said the country’s air force was striking targets ‘in the heart of Tehran’. The strikes came after Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed in the first wave of attacks. Although Israel said it was targeting military assets in Iran, there have also been reports of a high civilian death toll
