Protesters have clashed with police outside South Korea’s parliament, which has defied the president and blocked his move to declare emergency martial law.

Yoon Suk Yeol accused the country’s main opposition party of sympathising with North Korea and says this is "to eradicate the despicable pro-North Korean anti-state forces that are plundering the freedom and happiness of our people."
Martial law is when military authorities take control – usually temporarily – and it was the first time it’s been declared since the country’s military dictatorship ended in the late 80s.
