“The shaking reminded me of the Kumamoto quake [10 years ago] and I was frightened,” said Hiroki Shimoda, an official at nearby Mifune town hall, who saw the roof tiles of homes crash down to the ground as a 6.8-magnitude earthquake shook south Japan.
At least 50 people have been injured in the quake, with some trapped and presumed dead inside a partly collapsed shopping mall, according to local reports citing police sources.
The earthquake hit Kumamoto prefecture on the southern Kyushu island Tuesday, knocking out power to thousands of homes and damaging roads, bridges and buildings.
