Spain is seeing record numbers of migrant arrivals by boat. More than 60,000 migrants have arrived irregularly on Spanish coasts in 2024. The Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean have long been the main destination.
But a new hotspot is emerging: the popular holiday island of Mallorca. Officials are highlighting a new Mediterranean migration route between Algeria and the Balearic Islands, which are less than 300 km apart.
Our correspondent Jan-Philipp Scholz has spoken to residents on the island – and migrants, who see Mallorca as a gateway to mainland Europe.
