Spain’s prime minister says it is ‘time for a woman to serve’ as UN secretary general

During his speech at the UN general assembly, the Spanish prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, said the next secretary general must be a woman from Latin America.

‘And what I’m advocating for this leadership is very clear. Nine men have served as secretary general of this organisation in its 80 years of existence. Now it’s time for a woman to serve, a Latin American woman,’ he said.

The selection of the next UN chief is expected later this year with the term of António Guterres ending on 31 December.
