STARMER LATEST: Former Health Secretary Alan Milburn has warned of a growing “moral crisis” in Britain as youth unemployment continues to rise, with more than one million young people now reportedly out of work or education. Discussing the findings of his new report, Milburn said the issue is “more than a statistic, it is a warning,” describing the situation as one of the most serious social challenges facing the country today.
Milburn revealed that his report predicts one in six people aged 16 to 24 could be out of work and education by the end of the decade unless urgent action is taken. Speaking to GB News, he said: “I’ve been around politics and public policy for a very long time, but I have never known an issue as visceral with the public.” He also faced questions from @DrStephenDixon over whether Labour government policies may have contributed to the worsening figures and mounting public concern.
As pressure grows on ministers to address rising welfare dependency and economic inactivity, Milburn insisted that “welfare reform is absolutely essential” if the government hopes to reverse the trend. Warning that the situation is now “more of a fear than a concern,” he outlined the changes he believes are needed to get young people back into work, education, and training, while preventing a generation from being left behind.
