Sir Keir Starmer says he would be prepared to deploy British troops to Ukraine if a peace deal is reached with Russia.
The soldiers would act as part of a peacekeeping mission.
His comments come as European leaders hold an emergency summit to discuss the war in Ukraine – and two senior American officials head to Saudi Arabia for peace talks with Russia.
Neither Europe nor Ukraine have been invited to the discussions between the US and Moscow.
